CopoMais, the reusable cup system now helping Lisbon to conserve resources and reduce single-use packaging litter in the city, will be presented at the ENLU conference in Guimarães this September. And it will not simply be a case of talking about reuse: visitors to the national urban cleanliness conference will be able to experience CopoMais themselves.
Besides being the birthplace of Portugal and the 2026 European Green Capital, Guimarães is hosting the 8th National Meeting for Urban Cleanliness (ENLU) from 8 to 10 September. CopoMais will be showcased as one of the solutions helping cities become more sustainable and reduce waste from single-use packaging.
During the event, TOMRA Reuse will install one of the automated return machines currently used in Lisbon. Attendees will be able to use the reusable cups provided during the conference and return them directly through the machine.
Lisbon’s experience will also feature on the first day of the conference. João Jalé, Senior Manager for TOMRA Reuse in Portugal, will explain how CopoMais was developed, share its initial results and outline the next steps for a project that is now expanding its return network across Bairro Alto, Cais do Sodré and Bica.
Launched in November 2025, CopoMais was created through a partnership between Lisbon City Council, AHRESP and TOMRA, based on a simple idea: to make returning a reusable cup easy, so that it can be put back into circulation rather than becoming another piece of waste.
Now, the solution is heading to Guimarães to show how reuse can move from theory into the everyday life of cities.
ENLU is organised by the Urban Cleanliness Association — Partnership for Smart and Sustainable Cities (ALU), together with Guimarães City Council, and forms part of the Guimarães European Green Capital 2026 program.

But this year, residents and visitors to the Bairro Alto district in Lisbon can quench their thirst with a new twist: CopoMais. CopoMais is Lisbon’s new reusable cup system, now being rolled out in Barrio Alto. This new system is designed to address the plastic packaging waste challenges of the Portuguese capital’s historic center.
Two new CopoMais return stations have been installed in Lisbon, one in Principe Real and one in Miradouro S. Pedro.
Lisbon launched its new city-wide reusable cup system, “CopoMais Lisboa.” The brand name “CopoMais” indicates that it is more than just a cup – it’s a part of system that enables circularity and makes reuse convenient, efficient and traceable. It is also a system that gives the user back the deposit paid when buying a beverage in one of the participating bars.
